Career Direction With Cisco Certifications Part 3

In our last blog post we talked about the Cisco Certified Network Professional Certifications at the Entry, Associate and Professional Levels. In this post we would be concluding with the last two aspects of the Cisco certification.

  • The Expert Level
  • The Architect Level

Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) comprises of CCIE Collaboration, CCIE Data Center, CCDE, CCIE Routing and Switching, CCIE Security, CCIE Service Provider, CCIE Wireless. 

The certification is an expert-level certification that ensures that you gain knowledge and experience in collaboration solutions integration and interoperation, configuration, and troubleshooting in complex networks and the challenges of video, mobility, and presence as the foundation for workplace collaboration solutions.

 

Now let talk about the various parts of CCIE.

 

  • Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert Data Center (CCIE Data Center) certifies the expert-level skills required for the planning, design, implementation and management of complex, modern IT data center infrastructure. This certification is for experienced data center professionals who are seeking future-proof skills that are needed for leadership roles focused on harnessing in-depth IT data center solutions and emerging technologies.

Prerequisites

There are no formal prerequisites for CCIE certification.

CCIE Data Center Written Exam

CCIE Data Center Lab Exam

 

  • The Cisco Certified Design Expert (CCDE) is for expert-level network design engineers, expert-level network leads of IT infrastructure teams, and expert-level network leads of architecture teams working in job roles that require them to translate business needs, budget, and operational constraints into the design of a converged solution. CCDE brings ensures that they are well qualified to address the most technically challenging network infrastructure design assignments.

  Prerequisites

There are no formal prerequisites for CCDE. No specific training or other professional certifications are required.

Required Exam(s)

CCDE Written Exam: The 2-hour, written qualification exam covers network design in the areas of routing, tunneling, Quality of Service (QoS), management, cost, capacity, and security. You must pass the written exam before you are eligible to schedule the CCDE practical exam.

 

CCDE Practical Exam: The 8-hour Practical exam tests your ability to perform design analysis, justify design requirements, and develop a design implementation based on best practices. Only candidates that have a passing score on the CCDE Written Exam may register for the CCDE Practical Exam.

 

  • Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert Routing and Switching (CCIE Routing and Switching) certifies the skills required of expert-level network engineers to plan, operate and troubleshoot complex, converged network infrastructure.

Prerequisites

There are no formal prerequisites for CCIE certification.

Required Exam(s)

CCIE Routing and Switching Written Exam: You must pass the two-hour, written qualification exam, which covers networking concepts and some equipment commands before you are eligible to schedule the lab exam.

CCIE Routing and Switching Lab Exam: The eight-hour lab exam tests your ability to configure actual equipment and troubleshoot the network in a timed test situation. You must make an initial attempt of the CCIE lab exam within 18-months of passing the CCIE written exam. If you do not pass the lab exam within three years of passing the written exam, you must retake the written exam before being allowed to attempt the lab exam again.

 

  • The Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert Security (CCIE Security) program recognizes security experts who have the knowledge and skills to architect, engineer, implement, troubleshoot, and support the full suite of Cisco security technologies and solutions using the latest industry best practices to secure systems and environments against modern security risks, threats, vulnerabilities, and requirements.

 Prerequisites

There are no formal prerequisites for CCIE certification.

Required Exam(s)

CCIE Security Written Exam: You must pass the two-hour, written qualification exam covering network security concepts and some equipment commands before you are eligible to schedule the lab exam.

CCIE Security Unified Exam Topics v5.0

 

CCIE Security Lab Exam: The eight-hour lab exam tests your ability to get a secure network running in a timed test situation. You must make an initial attempt of the CCIE lab exam within 18-months of passing the CCIE written exam. If you do not pass the lab exam within three years of passing the written exam, you must retake the written exam before being allowed to attempt the lab exam again.

Lab Exam v4.0 Information (Last day to test: January 30, 2017)

Lab Exam v5.0 Information (Available for testing: January 31, 2017)

The eight-hour lab exam v5.0 format consists of three modules and need to be taken in the following sequence during the day of the exam:

Module 1: Troubleshooting module (two hours)

Module 2: Diagnostics module (one hour)

Module 3: Configuration module (five hours

 

  • Cisco CCIE Service Provider (CCIE Service Provider) certification is for expert-level SP network engineers who bring the knowledge and skill to build an extensible Service Provider infrastructure to deliver rich managed services.

 Prerequisites

There are no formal prerequisites for CCIE certification.

Required Exam(s)

CCIE Service Provider Written Exam: You must pass the two-hour, written qualification exam covering concepts and equipment commands related to packet-based networking infrastructure, before you are eligible to schedule the lab exam.

Revision to CCIE and CCDE Written Exams Retake Policy (effective August 2, 2014)

 

CCIE Service Provider Lab Exam: The eight-hour lab exam tests your ability to configure actual equipment and get a service provider network running in a timed test situation. You must make an initial attempt of the CCIE lab exam within 18-months of passing the CCIE written exam. If you do not pass the lab exam within three years of passing the written exam, you must retake the written exam before being allowed to attempt the lab exam again.

Revision to CCIE Lab Exams Retake Policy (effective August 2, 2014)

 

  • The Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert Wireless (CCIE Wireless) certification assesses and validates wireless expertise. Candidates who pass the CCIE Wireless certification exams demonstrate broad theoretical knowledge of wireless networking and a solid understanding of wireless local area networking (WLAN) technologies from Cisco, the market leader in WLAN technology.

Prerequisites

There are no formal prerequisites for CCIE certification.

CCIE Wireless Written Exam: You must pass the two-hour, written exam before you are eligible to schedule the lab exam.

CCIE Wireless Lab Exam: The eight-hour lab exam confirms that you have the job skills and technical knowledge required of a wireless expert-level network professional. You must make an initial attempt of the CCIE lab exam within 18-months of passing the CCIE written exam. If you do not pass the lab exam within three years of passing the written exam, you must retake the written exam before being allowed to attempt the lab exam again.

  • The Cisco Certified Architect (CCAr): This certification is for senior network infrastructure architects who produce technical specifications for the network to support business objectives. The curriculum focuses on understanding the business strategy and translating it into technical infrastructure requirements.

 Prerequisites

Valid Cisco CCDE certification can act as a prerequisite, along with a thorough understanding of networking infrastructure principles.

There are no formal training programs available for the CCAr certification. However, candidates wishing to attain their CCAr certification must meet before an in-person board made of Cisco-appointed exam committee members, during which the candidate defends their proposed network solution.
